When It’s Time to Replace Your Furnace

Most residential furnaces in our service area last 15 to 20 years. By the end of that window, energy bills climb, repair frequency rises, and parts for older models become harder to source. Many homes across Tracy, Stockton, Manteca and Lathrop are running first- or second-generation furnaces installed in the 1990s and early 2000s and are due for replacement. Replacement is the right call when repair costs approach the value of new equipment, when the heat exchanger has cracked, when efficiency has dropped noticeably year over year, or when you want to capture California rebates by moving to a high-efficiency Carrier system or converting to a heat pump. Newer Carrier furnaces run cleaner, quieter and dramatically more efficiently than 20-year-old equipment, and the difference shows up immediately on PG&E winter bills.

Local Climate & Installation Context

Heating season in our service area is real, even outside the coastal Bay Area. Stockton, Manteca and Lodi see weeks of Tule fog with temperatures in the 30s and 40s, and Tracy adds Altamont wind to the picture. The Tri-Valley and East Contra Costa cities of Pleasanton, Livermore, Walnut Creek, Antioch and Brentwood see real winter cold snaps each season. Even mild Bay Area cities — Oakland, Berkeley, Daly City — run heat consistently November through March in older housing without modern insulation. Many homes built in the 1970s through 1990s have furnaces past their service life and ductwork that has aged alongside the equipment, which is why we inspect ducts during the installation process and recommend repair or replacement honestly. Every install is Title 24 compliant and HERS-documented where required.

Furnace Installation FAQ

Furnace Installation Questions

How long does furnace installation take?

A typical residential furnace replacement in Tracy, Stockton or the surrounding cities takes one full day when we are swapping a like-for-like Carrier system on existing ductwork. New installations or jobs that require flue, gas line, or electrical modifications can run into a second day. We provide a written schedule with your estimate so you know exactly what to expect, and we leave the home heated when the work is complete.

Should I choose a gas furnace, electric furnace, or heat pump?

It depends on your home and your priorities. Gas furnaces are still the most common residential heat source in our service area and are cost-effective to operate where natural gas is available. Electric furnaces avoid gas appliances entirely and are simple to install but cost more to run. Heat pumps both heat and cool with one system, run dramatically more efficiently, and capture the largest California rebates and federal tax credits. We walk you through the operating-cost math during the estimate so you can pick with full information.

Do I need a permit to replace my furnace in California?

Yes. California Title 24 requires a permit for new furnace installations and most replacements, and replacing the furnace often triggers ductwork verification as part of the install. We pull all required permits, perform the work to Title 24 standards, and coordinate HERS testing where required. This protects your warranty, your home value, and your eligibility for utility rebates.

What size furnace do I need?

Right-sizing matters even more than for AC. An oversized furnace short-cycles, leaves rooms unevenly heated, and shortens its own life by switching on and off too often. We perform a Manual J load calculation that accounts for square footage, insulation, window placement, ductwork and your local climate. Stockton, Tracy and Manteca homes have different load profiles than Bay Area homes — sizing reflects that.

How much does a new furnace cost in the Bay Area?

Pricing depends on furnace efficiency, fuel type, condition of existing ductwork, and any electrical or gas-line work required by California Title 24. As a Carrier Authorized Dealer we install genuine Carrier furnaces, and high-efficiency models qualify for federal tax credits and PG&E rebates that lower net cost. Every quote is itemized in writing. Wisetack financing 3 to 60 months is available.

What warranty comes with a new Carrier furnace?

Genuine Carrier furnaces installed by an Authorized Dealer carry Carrier's full manufacturer warranty, which on most models includes 10 years on parts and 20 years to lifetime on the heat exchanger when registered, plus our written workmanship guarantee. Our factory-trained technicians install the system to Carrier specification so your warranty coverage is preserved and we can process warranty claims directly.
